For the premier of 'GRWM' - our new style column- we met with Pelumi Oyewo, who runs the Instagram platform StyledByPluto and is a stylist who is constantly working to grow his already impressive archive of conceptual curated looks, drawing inspiration from feel-good art and constructing his own pathway towards what he defines as success as both a stylist and an overall creative.
NV: What’s your name?
StyledByPluto: Oyewo Oluwapelumi
NV: Can you tell us a bit about why and what got you into styling?
StyledByPluto: For as long as I can remember I’ve always been particular about what I wear. I remember when I was younger and I got my outfits picked out for me when it was time to go out; if I didn’t like them I would always throw tantrums and stuff like that. I grew up always trying to look good.
NV: Talk us through your process and what it’s like creating a look or coming up with style concepts.
StyledByPluto: When creating concepts for a look, I first of all try to understand the aim and who I am styling. I then channel my focus to pieces I am feeling at that particular time and try not to debate a lot on whether they are perfect or not. Finally, I make changes till I’m satisfied. Also, I consume a lot of other stylists' content so that helps to build and streamline my style.
NV: What is the inspiration behind this style guide?
StyledByPluto: The inspiration behind this style guide is just showing where my head has been at for a while now which is me pondering on the idea of trying to put together garments from primarily African-owned brands with other international fashion brands we know and I've used pieces from Mowalola, Bolapsd, and more to push this agenda.
NV: Are there any specific forms of art that inspire you with creativity and ideas?
StyledByPluto: I get inspired by RnB, particularly sounds from Realestk, and I listen to Jazz music a lot; anything that sounds thoughtful with good melodies. Also recently I've been feeling a connection to Jenny Saville’s paintings.
NV: Dream Collaboration?
StyledByPluto: My dream collaboration would be leading the styling of a runway show for a fashion house like Louis Vuitton.
NV: Are there any stylists/designers/artists you look up to?
StyledByPluto: I look up to Julius Juul and his work at Heliot Emil. I love how well he defines the identity of the brand. I also respect Nigo and his contribution to the growth of streetwear.
